Wanted to send a quick reminder that this week Santa will be making visits to the Galax and Carroll County Public Libraries! Santa will be at the Galax Public Library tomorrow, Wednesday, December 16, during the 10:30-11:30 storytime. Then on Thursday, December 17, Santa will make a visit during the 10:30-11:30 storytime at the Carroll County Public Library. We are happy to report that Mrs. Claus will be able to attend all of this week’s storytimes! We hope to see everyone there!

I hope you all had a great week! This weeks storytime theme was the Wizard of Oz! Those of you who don’t know me, I’m a huge Wizard of Oz fan, so I thought it would be awesome to do a Wizard of Oz themed storytime! I encouraged for the children to dress up as their favorite Oz character. I dressed up as Dorothy! We all had a blast!
Book 1: The Wizard of Oz: Colors
The Floppy Scarecrow
The floppy, floppy Scarecrow
Guards his field all day.
He waves his floppy _______. (hands, feet, head, arms, legs, etc.)
To scare the crows away!
Book 2: The Wizard of Oz: Counting
Book 3: The Wizard of Oz: Shapes
The Merry Old Land of Oz/Touch Your Nose
Start by singing the beginning of “The Merry Old Land of Oz”…..
Ha ha ha, Ho ho ho
And a couple of tra la las
That’s how we laugh the day away
In the merry old land of Oz
Bzz, bzz, bzz, Chirp, chirp, chirp
And a couple of La di das
That’s how the crickets crick all day
In the merry old land of Oz
Then continue with the same tune, singing……
Touch your nose. Touch your chin.
That’s the way this game begins.
Touch your eyes. Touch your knees.
Now pretend you’re going to sneeze (A-choo!).
Touch your hair. Touch one ear.
Touch your two red lips right here.
Touch your elbow where it ends.
That’s the way this touch game ends!

Craft: Wizard of Oz Coloring Pages
I decided to print out several Wizard of Oz themed coloring pages for the kids.
I believe everyone enjoyed this storytime, especially me!
I hope you all had a great week! This weeks storytime theme was Boogie, Woogie, Dance! I thought this theme would be a great way for kids to get up, wiggle, and fun!
Craft: Handmade Dance Streamers
- Popsicle sticks or Tongue Depressors
- Tape (Scotch or Maskin)
- Different color streamers
What you do:
- Cut your streamers into 6-8 inch long strips (I used 3 strips for each stick-depending if the child wanted to do 1 or 2 sticks….we did 2 sticks per child with 6 different color streamer strips)
- Group your strips together evenly
- With the grouped streamers, wrap/fold on the top of the stick, then tape
- Some children wanted to tape the sticks together to make it look like a baton
- Voila! You are ready to dance with your streamers!
Book 1: Giraffes Can’t Dance by Giles Andreae
We did the Hokey Pokey, by the end ask the children for ideas! So much Fun!
Book 2: Wiggle by Doreen Cronin
Play Music & Dance! Ask the kids if they know any dance moves, they will be glad to share! Also, if you are a good dancer, teach the children disco, moon walk, ballet….etc.
Book 3: Frank was a Monster who wanted to Dance by Keith Graves
I thought this was an awesome interactive storytime for the wee ones! We all had a blast! 🙂
I thought it would be a great idea to start adding what we do during storytimes on here in case anyone misses storytime or would like to use this as a reference. So, the first week back to fall storytime was the theme: Musical Shakers! We ended up doing the craft first, which were maracas, and then we shook, rattled and rolled to our hearts content during storytime!
Craft: Handmade Maracas
- Plastic Spoons
- Colorful slim duct tape
- Easter Eggs (make sure there are no holes)
- Rice or Beans
What you do:
- Put a spoonful of Rice or Beans inside Easter Egg
- Then position spoons and Easter Egg together
- Then use the colorful slim duct tape to tape along the Easter Egg and Spoon (be sure to tape around the middle where the seam of the Easter Egg-don’t want rice or beans flying everywhere). It’s also a good idea to tape at the bottom of the spoon handle, makes it easier.

I decided not to do any fingerplays, rhymes, or flannel board stories between each book. We acted out and shook with our maracas through each story! I hope you all have fun reading and shaking! Reading is FUN!
